The Hampton Court Conference between leading Anglicans and Puritans is held before James I. The King and Archbishop Whitgift, though refusing to entertain doctrinal changes in the Church of England, support the request for a new translation of the Bible. Most of the Puritans requests were rejected; James I held to the principle 'No bishops, no king'.
