Preceding the better known 1707 Act of Union by over half a century, on 18th March 1652 the English Parliament passed an Act for the Union of England and Scotland. In the aftermath of the defeat of the Scottish Covenanters who had allied with Charles II in the third British civil war, this was effectively an annexation of Scotland by England. The Scottish Estates were abolished, and as a substitute, the Scots were allocated 30 representatives in the English Parliament.
