The Dano-Swedish War of 1658 to 1660 was a continuation of the long-running conflict between these two Baltic states. At this period, Danish power ruled an area more precisely known as Denmark-Norway, and Sweden was also attempting to expand its territory by conquering Royal Prussia. The Danes were supported in the war by the Dutch, against whom England had just waged war between 1652 and 1654. The new Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell's son Richard, sent Edward Montagu with a fleet to sail to the aid of the Swedes in this conflict, in order to protect England's commercial interests against the Dutch.
