General George Monck was a professional soldier who managed successfully to switch sides during 1660, from a loyal member of the Protectorate army to an orchestrator of the Restoration. At this point, however, as a moderate Presbyterian, he was championing the rights of Parliament against the radical elements of the army led by Fleetwood and Lambert. Outraged at the army's dissolution of Parliament in October, he had begun to arrest soldiers in Scotland whom he considered unreliable or suspicious. John Lambert, however, saw this as a threat to the authority of the army, and travelled north with at least 10 000 troops, reaching Newcastle in mid-November. He had undertaken this march in an attempt to prevent Monck entering England, but on 8 December, Monck brought his army across theā€¦
