After the collapse of the Protectorate and Commonwealth, a new parliament was elected which was termed the 'Convention' Parliament, because it had not been summoned by a sovereign. Although it gathered in a country without a monarch, however, its primary function was to bring one back into existence. It declared that Charles II had been rightful King since the execution of his father on 30 January 1649.
