On 22 January, the U.S. and Colombia agreed to a treaty that would see the U.S. dig a Panama Canal. On 3 November, Panama declared its independence of Colombia (with U.S. support). President Theodore Roosevelt formally recognized Panama on 6 November. The U.S./Panama canal treaty was signed 18 November.
