Literary/ Cultural Context Note

On 7 February 1964, the British rock band the Beatles landed in New York City for their first American tour. A significant moment was the Beatles’ appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. The frenzied and fawning behaviour of female audience members demonstrated to viewers at home that Beatlemania had gripped America as well as the United Kingdom.
