On the 21st of April, 1972 Apollo 16 became the 5th mission of the Apollo program to land on the Moon. Launched on the 16th of April and manned by John W. Young, T. Kenneth Mattingly Jr. and Charles M. Duke Jr., it landed on the unexplored highland area of the lunar surface. It was the 2nd of the 'J' missions, which focused on scientific exploration.
