Historical Context Note

The Dakota War of 1862 (also known as the Sioux Uprising), began on the 17th of August, 1862, and saw the eastern Sioux fight American settlers and the US Army. On the 26th of December, 1862 the war ended with the mass execution of 38 Dakota men.
