The first in-depth geological survey of the Grand Canyon was made by the American geologist and US Army officer Clarence Dutton (15th May, 1841 - 4th January, 1912) in 1880 to 1881. The survey was published in 1882 as
A Tertiary History of The Grand Canyon District, with Atlas.
