Following the 1880s pogroms against the Jewish community and the introduction of the May Laws (repressive anti-Jewish laws introduced in Russia on the 15th May, 1882), many Jewish Russians chose to leave Russia and emigrate to the United States. The majority settled in New York, Chicago, Boston and Pennsylvania, and worked in poorly paid, low skilled jobs.
