Following defeats in Cuba and the Philippines, Spain signed a peace treaty with the US in Paris in December 1898. The treaty came into force on the 11th of April, 1899, and in it Spain ceded the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico to the US and relinquished sovereignty over Cuba.
