John of Salisbury was an author of two important tracts of political philosophy, the

Metalogicon

and the

Policraticus

. He is arguably more significant, however, for the many eminent people with whom he worked over the course of his life. He was a pupil in Paris of Peter Abelard and Gilbert of Poitiers. He became an advisor to Archbishop Theobald of Canterbury, and, after his death in 1161, to Thomas Becket. He was a friend of Pope Hadrian IV, the only English Pope in history, and the last post he held was that of Bishop of Chartres.
