On the 9th of July, 1979, the space probe
Voyager 2reached its closest approach to Jupiter, coming within 570,000 km of its cloud tops. Between
Voyager 1(which reached Jupiter in March 1979) and
Voyager 2, over 30,000 images of Jupiter and its satellites were sent back to Earth.
