Leo Hendrik Baekeland (14th November, 1863 - 23rd February, 1944) was a Belgian chemist who lived and worked in New York. Between 1907 and 1909 he developed the hard moldable plastic Bakelite, and, as it could be mass produced, it came to be used for a wide range of products including radios, telephones, toys and household goods.
