In January 1979 NASA's
Voyager 1spacecraft began returning photographs of Jupiter and its satellites. It made its closest approach in March 1979 and the images sent by
Voyager 1and
Voyager 2provided important new information about Jupiter and particularly the existence of volcanic activity on its moon 'Io'.
