Voyager 1

spacecraft began returning photographs of Jupiter and its satellites. It made its closest approach in March 1979 and the images sent by

Voyager 1

and

Voyager 2

provided important new information about Jupiter and particularly the existence of volcanic activity on its moon 'Io'.
