The Black Arrow: A Tale of the Two Roses is an adventure novel which first appeared as a serial in the children's periodical Young Folks, between June and October 1883. Stevenson's Treasure Island had completed its serialised appearance in that paper the previous year, and the author was asked by the editor, James Henderson, to provide a new story for his young readers. In its serialized form, The Black Arrow appeared under the pseudonym of Captain George North, which the author had also used for his previous contribution. It also bore a different subtitle: “a Tale of Tunstall Forest”.
