Die Jungfrau von Orleans. Eine romantische Tragödie [The Maid of Orleans: A Romantic Tragedy, completed/premiered 1801, published 1802] is Johann Christoph Friedrich Schiller’s (1759–1805) dramatic adaptation of the legendary history of French liberation hero Joan of Arc. Die Jungfrau von Orleans is the third of five dramas completed in the final six years of Schiller’s life (Wallenstein, 1798/1799; Maria Stuart, 1800; Die Jungfrau von Orleans, 1802; Die Braut von Messina [The Bride of Messina, 1803]; and Wilhelm Tell, 1804). Die Jungfrau von Orleans premiered on 11 September 1801 in Leipzig to great acclaim; Albert Ludwig established that between 1786 and 1885, no drama was performed more often in Berlin than Schiller’s Die Jungfrau von Orleans (Ludwig 490). The play has remained one of Schiller’s most resonant, despite cyclically mixed political-critical reception.
