In his new Introduction to the 1996 Paupers’ Press edition, Colin Wilson wrote: “With Sex and the Intelligent Teenager I wanted to express the ideas of an earlier book, Origins of the Sexual Impulse, in a simple form that would be accessible to the generation I hoped would be my future readers” (i). The book was first published in the UK by Arrow Books in 1966 and in the US by Pyramid Books in 1968. Italian, Danish, Dutch and Japanese translations were later produced.

In his Introduction to the original edition he explained that he came to write the book as a direct response to Barbara Cartland’s (1901-2000) Sex and the Teenager, which purported to give advice to young people on sexual behaviour but instead contained sentences such as: “I can assure you that decently...
