Francis Bacon: Novum Organum. (88 words)
Natural philosopher Francis Bacon's Novum Organum Scientiarum declared itself to be a 'new instrument of science'. In this work, whose title page showed the mythical Pillars of Hercules broken through, charting a new course to the open sea, Bacon claimed to have formulated a new system of logic. This was based on empiricism rather than the syllogisms of Aristotle. It is largely through this tract that Bacon has become famous as the initiator of an inductive scientific method, based on an accumulation of data rather than first principles.
