First published in Florence, Last Poems (1932) is a posthumously issued volume in two parts, “More Pansies” and “Last Poems”. Each part is based on an autograph notebook, appropriately referred to as “The ‘Nettles’ Notebook” and “The Last Poems Notebook”, and respectively listed as E192b and E192a in the Bibliography (Roberts 614-8). Lawrence composed the 231 “nettles” in the first notebook between February and September 1929, and although he extracted from “The ‘Nettles’ Notebook” the verse satires for Nettles (1930), ninety per cent of the poems remained uncollected at his death. None of the 88 entries in “The Last Poems Notebook”, “poems about death” composed in October and November 1929 (Nehls iii. 421), had been published when Lawrence died in March 1920.
