In 1859, Anthony Trollope, a post office official who had been stationed in Ireland for nearly twenty years, began negotiations for a transfer to England. At this time, the prolific Trollope was a relatively successful writer. He had published three popular novels about the imaginary county of Barsetshire, of which the most recent, Doctor Thorne, had been the most popular by far, in addition to several novels with other settings, a number of short stories, and a work of non-fiction dealing with the West Indies. But he had never received more than four hundred pounds for a novel.
