This volume comprises lectures delivered by Wole Soyinka on the 31st August and the 1st September 1990 as his contribution to the W. E. B. Du Bois, George Padmore and Nkawme Nkrumah Pan African Lecture Series. There is no indication that they have been revised for publication (1993). It is, however, of note that, increasingly, Soyinka’s work is being published by African presses and distributed there.

This book comprises thirteen pages of prefatory material that defines the history of the lecture series and presents short biographies of the three historic principals after whom it is named. The lecture series is designed “to provide a forum that would engender a desire for self knowledge and serve as an inspiration for perseverance in the struggle for the advancement and
