on 18 July 1668, during the

Grand Divertissement Royal de Versailles

. At the

fête

, the French court was celebrating the triumph of Louis XIV over the Spanish at the Franche-Comté, marking the end of the War of Devolution, and the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in May 1668. The first public performance of the play took place in Paris on 9 November 1668, and from then onwards the work was performed without the musical elements of the

comédie-ballet

. The

livret

of the

Grand Divertissement

was published in Paris in 1668 by Ballard, while the text of Molière’s play was published the following year by Jean Ribou. While
