The Devil in France is Lion Feuchtwanger’s report on his internment as an “enemy alien” in war-time France in summer 1940. Following his escape from a camp in Les Milles, near Aix-en-Provence, he finally reached safety in New York on 6 October of the same year. The next day he began to dictate his account of his experiences, completing it in 1941. An English translation, about which Feuchtwanger had serious reservations, was published in November 1941 by Viking Press in New York. The book first appeared in German in Mexico in 1942 under the title Unholdes Frankreich (Inclement France) but was not published in (East) Germany until 1954, as Der Teufel in Frankreich.
