Afternoon of an Author (1957) is a fascinating selection of twenty hitherto uncollected pieces by F. Scott Fitzgerald: eleven short stories and nine articles. The book appeared seventeen years after his death and made a significant contribution to his growing posthumous reputation. Arthur Mizener (1907-88), who had produced the first full-length biography of Fitzgerald in 1951, edited Afternoon and provided an introduction to the whole volume and short prefaces to the pieces in the collection, setting them in the context of Fitzgerald’s life and work.
