José Rizal’s second novel
El Filibusterismowas published in Ghent in 1891. It is, as its first edition title-page announces, a “Continuacion del Noli me Tángere”: that is, a sequel to Rizal’s first novel,
Noli me tangere(1887). Like its predecessor,
El Filibusterismowas written in Spanish (Rizal later began a third novel,
Makamisa[
After Mass] in his native Tagalog, but abandoned it as a short fragment).
El Filibusterismo, however, is a much darker book, reflecting Rizal’s increasing anger at Spanish colonialism in the Philippines and frustration that his hopes for peaceful reform seemed doomed to failure.
