Sampson, Geoffrey.“Saussure: Language As Social Fact.” Schools of Linguistics: Competition and Evolution. London: Hutchinson, 1980. 34-56. Print.

Recommended by Robert Clark

Sampson writes with considerable accuracy and concision and describes the historical development of linguistic ideas better than anyone I know. This makes this book an ideal introduction for the student and general reader. His book has chapters on Saussure, the Descriptivists, the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (that language reflects and fosters particular socio-cultural understandings), the Prague School, Chomsky, Relational Grammar (Hjemslev, Lamb, Reich), and the London School.

Belsey, Catherine.“Criticism and Meaning.” Critical Practice. London: Routledge, 2002. 35-51. Print.

Recommended by Robert Clark

Students of literature tend to find the first seven pages of this chapter a helpful introduction to Saussure's ideas, partly because Belsey's exposition is succinct and clear and partly because the exposition is situated in a longer argument about the history of literary critical practice in relationship to the new procedures being developed in the 1970s (and afterwards).

Culler, Jonathan. Structuralist Poetics: Structuralism, Linguistics and the Study of Literature. London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1975. Print.

Recommended by Robert Clark

Culler's Structuralist Poetics builds upon Saussure's realisations to construct a new form of literary criticism so it will be of interest to those who wish to explore Saussure's influence in the 1980s.
