The Italian writer and poet Gabriele d’Annunzio was the ultimate Italian dandy, a flamboyant, controversial figure and hugely charismatic political orator who dominated the world of Italian letters, culture, fashion and politics from his first arrival in Rome in 1881 at the age of 18 until his death in the late 1930s. He was the only Italian writer at the turn of the century to possess a proper European dimension, no doubt thanks to the translation of his works and especially his notable link with France and French culture which helped cement his European fame and contributed greatly to turning him into a figure of wider intellectual reach at home and abroad.
