François Le Lionnais was born in Paris on 3 October 1901 and died at his home in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1984. His life spanned almost the whole of the 20th century, two World Wars, the Cold War, and a spur of methodological and disciplinary changes in France. Any preliminary search for François Le Lionnais in databases, encyclopedias, books, or other resources will yield that he was a French chemical engineer by trade (many more refer to him as a mathematician or amateur mathematician, according to friend and colleague Jacques Roubaud), writer, and general polymath with an impressive memory and rebellious attitude.
