Summary

When Patrick Modiano was announced as the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2014, the Anglophone world was slightly bemused; although much of his work had already been translated into English, he was hardly a household name. But the French public was both surprised and delighted: surprised because he had never been a “celebrity author”, although a very popular one, and delighted because he is a widely read and much-loved novelist with a career that now spans seven decades.
