in Hungarian]. László Körössy’s excellent translation of 2011 uses the given title. The work recounts the defense of the author’s great grandfather of the Hungarian fortress of Szigetvár against the Turks in 1566, which stopped an early assault on Vienna. It is a Baroque epic reflecting both the classical tradition and Italian influences, notably of Torquato Tasso. It goes beyond these models, however, to include local and family lore to create an epic which captures the struggle between Christianity and Islam in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
