Born in 1955, in the city of Porto, while the family was traveling in Portugal, João Paulo Borges Coelho spent his childhood between Ibo Island, in the north of Mozambique, and the small mining village of Moatize. Later, he moved with his family to the city of Beira, in the central region of the country, where he lived until the beginning of the War of Independence. With the start of political turmoil, his family sent him to Portugal to study at the University of Lisbon and to keep him away from the ‘political troubles’ that would eventually lead to Mozambique’s independence. He did not conclude his studies in Portugal, and he “never really felt at home” in Lisbon (Borges Coelho, 2009).
