Albertino Mussato was one of the first writers to begin reviving classical Latin in his works, which represent the highest expression of the great pre-humanist movement of Padua (

). Mussato’s literary production and engagement with classical models were intricately connected with his political commitment to Padua: “Mussato is, in every sense, the poet of the city” (Lummus, 25). Mussato is regarded as one of the great historians of fourteenth-century Italy.
