Þóra Jónsdóttir was an Icelandic poet who wrote mature modernist poetry for half a century but never received the attention and recognition she truly deserved. She was born at Bessastaðir on Álftanes in south-Iceland, but moved at the age of three with her family to the illustrious farmstead Laxamýri in Þingeyjarsýsla in the northeast part of the country, where she grew up in a busy household engaged in traditional rural work. Educational opportunities were limited, yet Þóra managed to complete her matriculation exam in 1948.
