Sarah Moore Grimké was born on November 26, 1792, in Charleston, South Carolina, to a wealthy slave-owning family. Her father, John, was senior associate on the state’s supreme court, and her mother, Mary, cared for their fourteen children, eleven of whom lived into adulthood. Receiving a remarkable education for a young woman of her day, Sarah studied alongside her older brother, learning mathematics, geography, world history, natural science, botany, and Greek.
