Sarah Moore Grimké was born on November 26, 1792, in Charleston, South Carolina, to a wealthy slave-owning family. Her father, John, was senior associate on the state’s supreme court, and her mother, Mary, cared for their fourteen children, eleven of whom lived into adulthood. Receiving a remarkable education for a young woman of her day, Sarah studied alongside her older brother, learning mathematics, geography, world history, natural science, botany, and Greek. She also participated in the legal training her father gave to his sons, and she apparently showed more skill than any of her brothers in the legal debates held in the Grimké home, but her parents objected to her desire to further education and thus her secret dream of …
