The Earl of Tyrone, Irish rebel, annihilates an English force under Sir Henry Bagnal at the Yellow Ford on the Blackwater River. The disaster prompts the appointment of the Earl of Essex as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (in Mar. 1599). This was the most serious defeat experienced by the English during their wars with Ireland.
