George Rusden was born in Surrey, but in 1835, when he was
sixteeen, his father was appointed a chaplain at Maitland, in New
South Wales, and the family emigrated to Australia. As well as
visiting and working for a time in China, Rusden worked for the
civil service in Melbourne. His 1883
