In 1920, Warren G. Harding of Ohio was nominated as the Republican candidate for president after a protracted and painful process. Harding, and his vice-presidential candidate, repudiated the traditional travel schedule (which was long and draining) and instead opted to run a ‘front porch' campaign. Harding trumpeted the value of a return to normalcy. The past eight years of Wilson (a reformer) and WWI, Americans were undoubtedly delighted with the possibility of such a return to peace, prosperity, and above all, normalcy. Harding thus won the 1920 general election with 64 percent of the popular vote, which was at the time a record. His size and scope of his victory was surely aided by Robert LaFollette, who ran as a third –party candidate under the Progressive Party banner.…
