Alfonso Fernandez de Lugo landed at Santa Cruz to reduce
Tenerife. He had made a previous attempt to take the island earlier
in the year, which culminated in the disastrous First Battle of
Acentejo, at which de Lugo only narrowly escaped with his life.
This time he had the support of a thousand veteran foot-soldiers
and a more cautious strategy.
