Manuel the Fortunate succeeds to the throne of Portugal on the death of his cousin, King John the Perfect. He was to rule until his death in 1521, and successfully patronised colonial exploration, presiding over Vasco de Gama's discovery of the maritime route to India and the discovery of Brazil. However, his reign also saw the expulsion of the Jews from Portugal.
