Venice sends an ambassador to the Sultan of Turkey, proposing the construction of a Suez Canal. Navigable waterways had been engineered between the Mediterranean and Red Seas before, but these had fallen into disrepair around 1000 AD, so this was the first modern proposal for a canal.
