Sigismund I succeeds to the throne of Poland on the death of Alexander I, ruling until his death in 1548. He faced a challenging political situation, since the introduction under his predecessor of the law 'Nihil Novi' meant that he could not enact any law without the consent of the Polish Parliament (the Sejm).
