Charles V's illegitimate daughter Margaret marries Alessandro de' Medici, Duke of Florence. This acts as a symbol of the Emperor's power over the Italian city-state and the reliance of Alessandro's authority on him, since it was only with Charles' help that he was able to take back control from the republic. However, Alessandro was to die the following year, and Margaret would live on to become Governor of the Netherlands in 1559.
