William Paulet, Marquess of Winchester, had a strikingly long political career, successfully managing to be first an associate of Wolsey and then of Cromwell, but avoiding losing out from either man's downfall. In the overthrow of government that took place in 1550, he acquired the role of Lord Treasurer that had previously been held by Protector Somerset, and was to hold the position until his death twenty-two years later.
