Sir William Cecil is appointed principal Secretary of State. He
had been close to toppled ruler Protector Somerset, and spent some
time in the Tower of London after Somerset's fall, but this new
appointment was to be the beginning of a long and successful career
in the service of both Edward VI and Elizabeth I, which only ended
with his death in 1598.
