Antonio Perez, formerly Philip II's private secretary, escapes from prison in Castile to Aragon. He had been imprisoned five years earlier for the murder of Juan de Escobedo, secretary to Philip's ambitious half-brother Don John of Austria, in March 1578. Perez had indeed arranged this assassination, but on the orders of Philip himself, so by imprisoning Perez, Philip was merely making him a scapegoat for the act.
