Maximilien de Bethune, Duke of Sully, is appointed
Superintendent of Finances in France. He pursues a strikingly
reforming economic policy, attacking tax-collecting abuses,
reducing the taille, raising restrictions on overseas trade and
encouraging agriculture and industry.
