Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, is divorced from Lady Frances Howard in scandalous circumstances. They had been married in their early teens, and she had since begun an affair with Robert Carr, Viscount Rochester. She now divorces Essex on grounds of impotence, to marry Rochester in his place.
