The Estates of Upper and Lower Austria formally recognise the Pragmatic Sanction, whereby Emperor Charles VI makes it possible for the Habsburg lands to be inherited by a woman. He is currently the sole living male Habsburg, with no sons, and a single daughter, Maria Theresa.
